Project Midtown - April 2012

Millsaps freshmen Michala Sullivan (second from left) from New York and Elizabeth Doyle (far right) from Tennessee help two students refine their reading skills at The Bethlehem Center in Jackson's Midtown neighborhood. The Millsaps students were part of the Christian Ministry Team's efforts during Project Midtown with community service activities happening at several areas in and around the Midtown neighborhood.

VOLUNTEER GOLF CART DRIVERS NEEDED
Students, THIS is your chance-
“To drive the shiny white golf carts you can’t help but gaze at when you pass by....” 
The Division of Student Life and Graduation Committee are looking for responsible student volunteer golf cart drivers for Graduation Day (May 12, 2012).  You will be needed before and after the ceremony to cart people to and from the Bowl.  If interested, please contact Tiffany Hammond or Laura Register at eventscheduling@millsaps.edu.  Let us know if you have any questions.

MILLSAPS COLLEGE FEMINISTS
Are you interested in women's and gender issues? Are you interested in political and community activism, volunteer work, fun discussions and movie nights, and the chance to meet lots of great people? Are you just curious about what feminism actually is? If so, you are invited to a 2012-13 Planning Meeting of the Millsaps College Feminists. Bring your ideas about how to make feminism and women's / gender issues more visible and accessible on campus and throughout the community! Meet us at Aladdin's in Fondren at 5:30 pm, Friday, April 20.

COLLEGE REPUBLICANS MEETING and WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT
The last College Republican meeting of the year will be Tuesday April 17th at 9pm in Olin 100. Also, please come out and support the Wounded Warrior Project by purchasing a wrist band for $3.00 outside the 'Caf from April 16th-20th. The Wounded Warrior Project supports soldiers who were injured in service on or after September 11th Services provided by WWP range from prosthetics to counseling. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the project.

NEW SOCIOLOGY/ANTHROPOLOGY FACULTY AND COURSES

The Sociology/Anthropology Department is pleased to announce a new visiting faculty member for the 2012-13 academic year as well as a visiting alumna who will be teaching classes this summer term. 


  • Starting in the fall semester, Dr. Louwanda Evans, whose work focuses on race, gender, and emotional labor, will join us as visiting assistant professor of sociology.  She will teach Introduction to Sociology, Methods and Statistics, and Deviance. 
  • This summer (Summer I), alumna Chelsi West will teach Introduction to Anthropology.

CAMPUS EVENTS...

KICKIN' FOR THE KIDS SOCCER TOURNAMENT

Tri Delta is proud to host their first annual Kickin' for the Kids, a 5v5 soccer tournament on Friday, April 20th at 3:30 in the Galloway Lawn to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. There will be a sign up table outside of the cafeteria and teams will enter with 5 people for $25. Every participant will receive a St. Jude Children's Research Hospital goody for participating and there will be contests, such as Best Team Jersey, for prizes. We hope to see you there to support a very good cause!

                                                      



DOCUMENTARY SCREENING - "FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO"
