THE BEATLES: Constructing Musical Meaning in the Counterculture (4 cr.)

Students: This course is about the Beatles as musicians. It cross-lists with music, allowing anyone not in the Core to take it. By taking it, you will earn that much-coveted Millsaps Fine Arts Credit. You'll even learn some music theory along the way.

Goals for the course include [but are not limited to]:

  • understanding the connection between history, politics, and the Beatles soundtrack it framed
  • developing a sophisticated ear, built on active listening strategies
  • understanding the Beatles’ place in popular music history
  • finally getting why George was so into Hindustani music...

Writing Center Tutoring Positions, 2014-15

The application deadline for a position in the Writing Center is Friday, December 13th.

If you are interested in becoming a Writing Center Tutor, you must submit a letter of interest and a confidential and sealed letter of recommendation from your Core 1 instructor (or, if you are a second year student or above, an instructor from your current semester who can speak to your writing ability) to the Writing Program office in John Stone Hall by 4:30 pm on December 13th.  In addition to your application materials, the essays in your Writing Portfolio will also be evaluated as part of the application process.  A successful candidate will usually score "Well Above Proficient" at the Core 1 evaluation point.

The selected applicants will be contacted over the Winter Break, and they will be required to enroll in WRIT 2001 (a one-credit hour Tutor Training Practicum) in the Spring 2014 term.  Upon successful completion of WRIT 2001, those students will be invited to work as Writing Center Tutors, and enroll in WRIT 3001 (a one-credit hour course for ongoing tutor training).

Please let Anita DeRouen know if you have any questions.
