THE 2014 HALL OF FAME
at MILLSAPS COLLEGE
Nomination/Application



The Hall of Fame is the highest annual honor bestowed upon an individual student by the Division of Student Life and the Student Body Association.  All nominated individuals must be enrolled in Millsaps College during the academic year of their nomination/application.  Nominees must hold senior class/graduating status, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20 at the time of nomination/application, and graduate in December, 2013 or May, 2014.  Four seniors will be selected for this honor.  The Hall of Fame recognizes an individual’s overall excellence in: scholarship; leadership; participation in activities, organizations, and campus life; service to the Millsaps student body, College community and/or local community; and other notable achievements.  Self-nominated student applications will be accepted for review.  2013 recipients included:  Austin Deskewies, Jennifer Goebel, Raven Scott, and Katie Wilson.

 “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.” 

Between 30-40 graduating students will be designated for this award, which essentially represents the most well-rounded students in the senior class.

            A minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA is required.  Other criteria include: 
   (1) elected, appointed, or selected for leadership positions
   (2) involvement in organizationsathletics, and activities
   (3) service to organizations, the college, the community, etc
   (4) all other out-of-class experiences for the “Other Involvement” category

            The faculty and staff nominate seniors for this accolade.  However, in recent years we learned that seniors wanted insurance that their nominations would not be overlooked nor forgotten by busy faculty-staff-administrators.  Consequently, all seniors who wish to be considered for this honor MUST submit their records of achievement via the attached application.  A thoroughly completed application has historically proven to be most effective.

            Applications are due to Alex Lawson, Who’s Who Selection Committee Chairperson, Student Life Office, Box 151063, or 3rd floor-College Center, by Friday, February 14, 2012 at 4:30 p.m.  Thank you for understanding that we cannot accept late applications.

            Recipients will be honored at the annual Who’s Who & Hall of Fame Revelation ceremony in April 2014, a component program in the Senior Year Experience.  The recipients are publicly introduced to the assembled audience, receive their specially designed honor certificates and will take formal photos for the yearbook, The Bobashela.

The “Dr. Darby Ray-Souls Afire” Honors

  The selection of the 2013-2014 “Dr. Darby Ray-Souls Afire” Honors is underway.  We ask for your thoughtful consideration of undergraduate and graduate students of any classification (eg, first-year, sophomore, junior, senior, graduate student) who have made significant contributions to community service and/or civic engagement on our campus, in our city, in our state, and in our region.

          The purpose of the “Dr. Darby Ray-Souls Afire” Honors” is to recognize qualities of integrity, dedication to others, honesty, fortitude of character, courage, and obligation which are essential to effective leadership in community service.  Dr. Darby Ray, a former professor of Religious Studies and founder of the College 1C1C Program epitomized the values, qualities, and energy reflected in these annually-presented accolades.  The criteria used in determining recipients are as follows:

·       Consistent life history of displaying honesty, responsibility, compassion, and devotion to the welfare of a community
·       Remarkable actions benefiting others
·       Unusual commitment of time, energy, and effort in service to others
·       Unselfish gifts of friendship and collaboration offered in the partnership of service, support, and synergy to the betterment of others or of communities
·       Scholarship (or grade point cumulative) is not a focal emphasis of this accolade, though it can be considered.  Good academic standing at the College is the minimum requirement.

The deadline for submitting a nomination(s) is Friday, February 28, by 4:30 p.m.  Nominations may be completed and submitted by any Millsaps College students or alumni.  The attached nomination form may be forwarded to others to encourage their nominations.  Other students should write the recommendation letters or written endorsement; we discourage all applicants or nominees from seeking faculty-staff-administrator letters of recommendation for this particular award.  Self-nominated student applications are welcome!
         
          All nominations or applications should be submitted to Matt Binion, Director of Campus Activities’ office, 3rd floor of the Campbell College Center.  Thank you for understanding that we cannot accept late applications or nominations.

          The trophy resembles a bright flame, emblematic of spreading light into dark places; of guiding enlightenment where ignorance’s shadows once reigned; or of sparking others’ passions from the source of its fire.  Up to 4 recipients may be selected by a panel of faculty/staff/students/alumni that, like true servant-leaders, remain anonymous until the recipients are announced at the annual Student Life Awards Celebration in April 2014.  The “Dr. Darby Ray-Souls Afire” Honors may only be won once during a student’s college career at Millsaps.

Dean’s Citation for Outstanding Alcohol or Drug Education Programming


Description

            The Dean’s Citation for Outstanding Alcohol or Drug Education Programming is an award bestowed upon a student or student organization that has created and executed an excellent program that focuses on alcohol and/or drug education.

            2008 recipients – (tie) Delta Delta Delta & Chair, Beth Sadler, Kappa Alpha Order & Chair, Daniel Honeycutt

Criteria

1. The program or event must occur during the 2013-2014 academic year, or between August 19, 2013 and March 28, 2014.

2. The program or event must be directed at students in the Millsaps College student body.

3. The program format can apply to a broad range of events.  The winning format may include:  a lecture, a non-alcoholic social event, an entertaining speaker, a forum, a workshop, a film, or a play.  The selection committee will accept almost any format for the event or program; the effectiveness of the format in educating the audience about alcohol or drugs is most important.  Program creativity is valued in the selection process.

4. A student or student organization must be the primary sponsor of the event or program.

5. The winning entry will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of staff and students. 

6. The selection committee may not designate a recipient every year.  Repeated annual submission of the same winning program may not result in winning the award more than once.


Deadline for entries is Friday, March 28, 2014, 4:30 p.m.

2014 Rev. Ed King LOVE Award

       The Division of Student Life welcomes nominations for the 2014 Rev. Ed King Leader of Values and Ethics (L.O.V.E.) Award.  Rev. King, College Class of 1958, is cited as one of the most influential of Mississippi civil rights leaders, and enshrined in the National Civil Rights Museum.  For many members of the College community, he remains a role model for moral leadership.  Thus, this award was named in his honor.

       The award is bestowed to the student leader who best exemplifies principled leadership for a cause of deep moral consequence that may meet with opposition but proves over time to be true.

       Former honorees include:

       2006 -    Andrea Dewey, advocate for the homeless-       hungry & Matt Vieronadvocate for LGBT persons
2007 -    Cat Edwards, advocate for women’s choice & John Forrest Douglas, advocate for the

       To nominate a student leader who best fits these criteria, please submit the name of the individual; and, submit a corresponding letter (and, if available, support materials) regarding how the individual fits the criteria for the honor.

       Nominations are due by Monday, March 24, 2014, 4:30 p.m.  While it is not required to name a recipient every year, if one is determined then (s)he will be presented at the Student Life Awards Celebration in April 2014.  Nominations, letters, and support materials may be returned to Mr. Matt Binion, Student Life Offices, 3rd floor of the Campbell College Center.  Electronic submissions are also welcomed.

FOR THE 2014
DON FORTENBERRY AWARD

       The Don Fortenberry Award is presented each year to a graduating student from any undergraduate academic division of the College who is considered to have performed the most notable, meritorious, diligent and devoted service to Millsaps College with no expectation of recognition, reward, or public remembrance.  The award is made under provisions by the Division of Student Life & Division of Institutional Advancement.  The Fortenberry Award pays tribute to the inestimable contributions of the former College Chaplain, the Reverend Don Fortenberry, who gave selflessly to the Millsaps community and to the enhancement of student character through more than three decades of servant-leadership. The Fortenberry Award is the highest student honor bestowed by the College for contributions outside the classroom.  The recipients include: 2004-Dr. Julia L. Mitchell, 2005-Ms. H. Paige Henderson, 2006 – Ms. Katie Beth Miksa, 2007 – Mr. John Forrest Douglas, 2008 – Rev. John Kellogg, 2009- Mr. Alex Allain, 2010 – Ms. Brittany Tait, 2011 – Ms. Mary Kate Rees, 2012 – Ms. Lauren R. Williams& 2013 – Ms. Chelsey Overstreet.

        Criteria to be considered, but not inclusive of all areas considered, include:  excellence in scholarship, superior leadership, significant or lasting contributions, commitment to a mission for community service, embrace of human diversity and difference, and involvement in campus life.  A nominee need not demonstrate superior performance in ALL of the aforementioned categories to merit application submission.  The successful candidate may demonstrate a sterling contribution through one titanic program or initiative; or contribute through a college career of projects and undertakings. 

        You are invited to submit a letter of nomination for this accolade to the Division of Student Life, Boyd Campbell Center 3rd Floor Office, by our deadline date of Friday, March 28, 2014, 4:30 p.m.  Nominations received after this date cannot be considered.  The attached nomination form may be utilized although you are encouraged to submit supplemental materials as you desire.  A thorough nomination enhances the review of a candidate’s worthiness.  Each student nominated will be contemplated by a faculty/staff/student selection committee that will determine the ultimate Fortenberry Award recipient.  The Fortenberry Award will be presented at the 2014 Commencement exercises.

        Any student nominated must be one who graduates during the 2013-2014 academic year in either the fall or spring semester.

Ars Ducendi Emerito Award
for Transfer Students
2013-2014

Please submit your applications or nominations for the 2013-2014 Ars Ducendi Emerito award (translated: the art of leadership through service).  The Ars Ducendi Emerito award recognizes a graduating senior who demonstrates a superior level of leadership and service benefiting the Millsaps community as a transfer student.  All nominated individuals must be students enrolled in the undergraduate program at Millsaps College during the academic year of their nomination/application.  Nominees must be transfer students holding senior class and graduating status, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 at the time of nomination/application, and graduate in December 2013 or May 2014. One senior recipient from the 2013-2014 academic year will be selected for this high honor.  The Ars Ducendi Emerito award recipient(s) will be recognized at the Student Life Awards ceremony in April 2014.   The 2013 recipient was Kasey Laird.

The deadline for receiving this year's nominations or applications is Friday, March 21, 2014, before 4:30 p.m.

            Nominations may be submitted by students, staff, or through self-nomination.  All nominations/applications that meet the aforementioned minimum criteria will be accepted for review.  The nominee need not demonstrate superior performance in all of the criteria to merit application submission. The standards for determining the honor recipient(s) include the following:
§  Superior leadership within the Millsaps community through participation in activities, committees, or organizations
o   Emphasis is placed on leadership within the Millsaps community, but all leadership participation will be reviewed
§  Consistent commitment to service benefitting other transfer students at Millsaps College .  Emphasis is placed on leadership and service that helps acclimate other transfer students to life at Millsaps College.
§  Other forms of leadership performed as a Millsaps student.

2nd Call for Robinson International Fellowships

The Office of International Education (OIE) is now accepting applications for the 2nd round of the 2013-14 Judy and E.B. Robinson, Jr., International Fellows Program. This call is for students applying to do a Summer 2014 Millsaps faculty-led study abroad program.
Criteria for Fellowships:
  • Current Millsaps undergraduate student
  • Have attended Millsaps for 1 full semester before applying
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Any class year EXCEPT seniors graduating in May 2014 (or before the program takes place)
  • Strong evidence of financial need*
  • No prior Robinson support
* Evidence of financial need is determined based on data from the applicant’s FAFSA, as submitted to the College for this academic year.

Millsaps Scholarship for British Studies at Oxford!!

The Millsaps College Office of International Education (OIE) and the Department of History are pleased to invite students to apply for a scholarship to participate in the highly regarded British Studies at Oxford (BS@O) program for summer 2014! The 2014 program is ideal for students majoring in history, English, European Studies, art history, or music, but is open to all majors. Applications for the BSAO program are considered on a rolling basis. Millsaps students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Students who are successfully admitted to the program may then apply for the Millsaps scholarship.

One scholarship has been designated for students majoring in history or in a field with significant historical content. A maximum amount of $11,000 will be awarded. Depending on the recipient’s financial need, the scholarship will cover all or a portion of the program cost ($9,250), and may also include funds for travel to/from England.

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS:
1.      Successful acceptance into BS@O program (hard copy of acceptance letter*)
2.      Evidence of inability to participate for financial reasons   
3.      Evidence of academic excellence      
4.      Personal statement (one-page typed essay explaining why you want to do British Studies at Oxford and how the study abroad program fits into your major and/or plans as a Millsaps student)

AN ETHNOGRAPHIC VISTA ON TANZANIAN LIFE AND CULTURE

Prerequisites: Prior coursework in SO AN highly recommended; a preparatory Survival Swahili course will be offered in the spring semester. Cost: $ 4,060
East Africa is an important region of the world for economic, political, and cultural reasons. This course will offer you the opportunity to gain a deep and rich firsthand understanding of life, history, economics, and culture in East Africa, an area of the world that is often neglected in many ways. East Africa offers rich and vibrant traditional cultures together with global cosmo­politan cultures that link the region to cultures from around the world, including South Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, China, and Europe.
The goal of the course is to put you in a position to learn from Tanzanians about their own experiences and culture. Tanzanians take great pride in their country’s identity as a “country of peace.” We will s pend 3 1 /2 weeks in this country of peace. The majority of the time will be s pent in homestays and daily ethnographic experiences in the southern highlands. We will also have the chance to spend some time in the coastal area and to visit one of Tanzania’s world-renowned national parks.

Class meets several times at Millsaps after spring semester final exams, and will travel May 18-June 18, 2014.

The Stylus-Extended Submission Deadline



The Stylus has EXTENDED THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE for our annual publication! This year in addition to the usual submissions poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, photography, and visual art, we will be accepting audio and video files for our the online format of the Stylus. So send us your songs, spoken word, slam poetry, interpretive dance, what have you!

Please review the submission guidelines and fill out the attached cover sheet if you would like to submit your work. Then send your cover sheet and your literary\artistic works as individual word doc or attachments to stylus@millsaps.edu

Interested in volunteering? Join the 1C1C Leadership Team! 1C1C Leadership Team members mobilize their peers to get engaged in the community, facilitate 1C1C annual activities and events for the campus, and participate in capacity building meetings once or twice per month.

The 1C1C Leadership Team offers all kinds of opportunities for involvement in volunteering.  Members can coordinate projects and help facilitate events such as reading fairs at Brown Elementary, MLK Play and Serve, the Holiday Education Supply Drive, the annual Block Party, as well as facilitate engagement opportunities for other students through the MillsapsVolunteer Project.
We now have a rolling application process, so any Sophomore, Junior, or Senior can submit an application at any time!

Information about campus visitors from Hastings, Nebraska

This January 19-23, a group of 30 education students from Hastings College will be visiting Jackson for their January Term course in multicultural education. After over a decade of a Chicago-based fieldwork for the class, Hastings is shifting its focus to Jackson, where these students hope to observe the rich diversity of the education system in Mississippi and all of the complex questions and innovative work being done here.

The Hastings College education department has partnered with Millsaps College’s 1 Campus 1 Community office to secure housing, plan cultural excursions, and assist in placing their students in suitable classrooms. The students will be placed in various classrooms around Jackson including the classrooms of Millsaps Alumni Christopher Hedglin, Raven Scott, Samantha Greenleaf, and Kate Lawrence. Essentially, the students will observe classrooms during the day and engage in dialogue with one another about their thoughts, observations and education in Mississippi in general each evening. While in Jackson, the Hastings students will attend the MLK Day service at Tougaloo College, visit Fondren, visit LeFleur's Bluff and hear live blues music at F Jones Corner.


So, if you see any unfamiliar faces around campus, be sure to give them a warm Millsaps welcome!

The winter community enrichment series beginning next week offers more than 70 fun, short term, noncredit classes for adults, and all classes are half price for Millsaps students, faculty and staff.

It’s a great chance to have fun and try something new like ballroom dancing, yoga, line dancing, learning magic tricks, improvisational acting, guitar, harmonica, piano, and much more.
