Robinson Fellowship

The Office of International Education (OIE) is now accepting applications for the 2nd round of the 2013-14 Judy and E.B. Robinson, Jr., International Fellows Program. The Program is designed to provide grants for financially needy students participating in study abroad programs offered by Millsaps College faculty. Studying abroad is one of the most important aspects of a complete college education, and participating in a program with a Millsaps professor makes it that much more rewarding. Attached is the 3-page application form, with a required short essay and faculty recommendation letter. For more information and to apply click the documents below. The deadline for submitting a Robinson Application for Summer 2013 programs is February 1, 2013!

•Current Millsaps undergraduate
•Attended Millsaps for 1 full semester
•Minimum GPA of 3.0
•NOT a senior graduating in May 2013
•Strong evidence of financial need
•No prior Robinson support

British Studies at Oxford Scholarship

The Millsaps College Office of International Education (OIE) and the Department of History are pleased to invite students to apply for a scholarship to participate in the highly regarded British Studies at Oxford (BS@O) program for summer 2013! One scholarship has been designated for students majoring in history or in a field with significant historical content.

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS:
1.)Successful acceptance into BS@O program (hard copy of acceptance letter)
2.)Evidence of financial need (to be determined by the OIE in consultation with the Office of Financial Aid)
3.)Personal statement (one-page typed essay explaining why you want to do British Studies at Oxford and how the study abroad program fits into your major and/or plans as a Millsaps student)

Submit scholarship applications to: Dr. Bill Storey, Dept. of History (CC 27) or Campus Box #150173, by 5:00 pm on Friday, February 15, 2013.

Community Enrichment
The community enrichment program offers more than 70 fun, noncredit classes beginning Jan. 28.  All are half price for Millsaps students.  Try beginning guitar, harmonica or tai’ chi. If art is your hobby, there are several drawing/painting/illustrating classes as well as jewelry making.   Go to www.millsaps.edu/conted to see the full schedule or pick up a printed brochure in front of AC 100.

Who's Who
Dear Seniors,
The applications are now out for 2013 Who’s Who Ceremony, which honors seniors at the end of their collegiate career. This announcement is a request to all GRADUATING SENIORS to apply for this honor.
When considering applying please keep in mind the following criteria:
  • Currently enrolled senior
  • Above average academic standing (GPA of 2.5 or above)
  • Evidence of broad participation and leadership on campus
  • Citizenship and service to the college and the community
  • Potential for future achievement
  • Generally well known on campus
  • Positive peer role model
We are looking for well-rounded students that excel in all areas of campus life.  In order to be considered for this award you must NOMINATE YOURSELF.  After nominations have been submitted the 2013 Who’s Who Selection Committee will select the students to receive this honor.

ResNet will close at 10pm Thursday evening, and re-open Tuesday at 6pm.

The Helpdesk will close this Friday at 4:30pm and re-open Tuesday at 8am.

Learn to Do Magic Tricks
Thursdays, January 31 & February 7 (2 class mtgs.)
6:30 – 8:00 p.m.; Cost $60 (ONLY $30 for Millsaps Faculty, Staff, and students)

This beginning magic class will start with insight into magic as well as exposure to beginning theory. We will also learn magic using cards, coins, string and other objects.  Please bring with you a deck of Bicycle playing cards, a Sharpie pen, and four quarters. All other supplies will be furnished by the instructor.

Robert Day is a self taught magician who has headlined in Branson, MO, and performed in comedy clubs all over the U.S.  In 1995, he was ranked #2 in the nation by the Society of American Magicians.

Guest Speaker
The Sociology/Anthropology Department will be the host guest speaker Dr. David Embrick, an associate professor in the Sociology Department at Loyola University–Chicago and author of several articles and books, for a talked entitled “Multiculturalism, Diversity & Inclusiveness: Examining Diversity Ideology in the Post-Civil Rights Era.”

The talk will focus on the relationship between diversity ideology and corporations and institutions.  It will examine that U.S. institutions, including those of education and higher education, are increasingly redefining diversity in a way that ignores or downplays persistent issues of racial or gender bias in the workplace and institutions of higher education.  Dr. Embrick will argue that diversity ideology has allowed many corporations and institutions to appear progressive in terms of advocating for inclusiveness, yet continue to maintain the status quo.  The conclusion from his research findings indicate that popular concepts and actions, such as affirmative action and the establishment of diversity offices has enabled many institutions to evoke new rhetoric that may be far more dangerous than colorblind racism.

January 23, Dr. Embrick’s talk will be held in Murrah Hall 207 at 6:30 p.m.

-Completed either three other math college classes (any level) OR
-One other math class which is above the level of Cal 2 (so numbered above 2230)
-Have an overall math gpa of at least a 3.0, and who are
-In the top 1/3 of their class overall

    Dean’s Citation for Outstanding Alcohol or Drug Education Programming
    The Dean’s Citation for Outstanding Alcohol or Drug Education Programming is an award bestowed upon a student or student organization that has created and executed an excellent program that focuses on alcohol and/or drug education.

    Criteria

    1. The program or event must occur during the 2012-2013 academic year, or between August 25, 2012 and March 31, 2013.
    2. The program or event must be directed at students in the Millsaps College student body.
    3. The program format can apply to a broad range of events.  The winning format may include:  a lecture, a non-alcoholic social event, an entertaining speaker, a forum, a workshop, a film, or a play.  The selection committee will accept almost any format for the event or program; the effectiveness of the format in educating the audience about alcohol or drugs is most important.  Program creativity is valued in the selection process.
    4. A student or student organization must be the primary sponsor of the event or program.
    5. The winning entry will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of staff and students. 
    6. The selection committee may not designate a recipient every year.  Repeated annual submission of the same winning program may not result in winning the award more than once.

    Deadline for entries is Friday, March 22, 2013, 4:30 p.m.
    All applications should be returned to Matt Binion, the Office of Student Life, 3rd floor Campbell College Center.
