Philosophy talk 11/8 @ 3:00 p.m.: McElroy on narrative intelligibility

COLLOQUIUM
sponsored by the Millsaps Department of Philosophy
and the Millsaps Philosophy Club

PEYTON McELROY (PhD, Stanford University)

“What Is This Endless Set of Meaningless Experiences
Trying to Teach Me?”
Narrative Intelligibility as Represented Development of Purpose

Abstract

Philosophers disagree on the nature of narrative intelligibility. Some think narratives have a theoretical function since they seem to order represented events so as to provide explanation. Others argue that the function of narrative is primarily aesthetic inasmuch as narratives are often designed for emotional effect and need not consist of causally related representations.

I argue against the aesthetic emphasis of Velleman et al. that narrative representations of events are arranged around perceived aims.  A narrative recounting of what happened is shaped by the organizing principle of agent purpose. Narrative helps us “get inside the mind” of some agent, which makes it a useful tool for collaboration and conflict resolution. When we tell “life stories” we select sets of events that track the development of our particular projects. We do this to gain control over experiences  that threaten to be meaningless.

Saffron Cross Events

Author J. Dana Trent and her husband Fred Eaker will join the Millsaps College community for a series of events on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9.

“The possibility that I’d get matched with anyone who wasn’t a Christian is minute, anyway, right?”
“Right,” God giggled.
Saffron Cross is the intriguing memoir of Dana, a Baptist minister, and Fred, a devout Hindu and former monk. The two meet on eHarmony and begin a sometimes daunting but ultimately inspiring journey of interfaith relationship and marriage. Trent’s compelling vignettes, often hilarious and refreshingly honest, offer readers a glimpse into the challenges of bringing together two vastly different spiritual paths into one household. This book includes chapters on an Indian ashram honeymoon, vegetarianism, sabbath-keeping, prayer, and grief, plus other challenges of interfaith relationships.

Friday Forum Lecture: 12:30-1:30pm on Friday, November 8 in the Academic Complex, room 215

Healthy Monday Tip

Care for the Caregiver
Caregivers play a crucial role in our community - they tend to loved ones who are ill or have disabilities. This task can become stressful over time; it can be lonely and mentally draining to watch a loved one deteriorate. Thankfully, there are local support groups available for caregivers at churches, hospitals, online and through other organizations.

If you're a caregiver, take some time this week to learn about the many resources available.  If you know a caregiver, reach out to them and see if you can do some household cleaning, food shopping, or other small things to reduce their stress.
