Latin American Studies
The Border,
Immigration,
and the War on Drugs.
Time & Date: 4:30-6pm, Thursday Jan. 31st
Location: Academic Complex 137
What’s next for U.S.-Mexican relations? The USA and Mexico have both just witnessed presidential inaugurations: President Barack Obama for a second term, while on December 1st Enrique Peña Nieto became president of Mexico .
Sharing a 2,000-mile border, the USA and Mexico are bound more closely than ever, by commerce, demographics, and culture. But they often differ sharply in their responses to undocumented immigration and narcotics traffic. Meanwhile, a perceived anti-immigrant stance helped cost the Republicans a landslide loss of the Latino vote in 2012, and Mexico ’s six-year war against drug cartels has cost some 60,000 lives.
Anthropologists Steve Striffler and Cecilia Ballí consider the practical impact of immigration and drug policies, the politicizing of initiatives, and new directions that policies may take.
