FREE RELIGIOUS STUDIES LECTURE

Dr. Amina Wadud, an American scholar of Islam

Dr. Amina Wadud is an American scholar of Islam with a progressive focus on Qur’anic interpretation. She currently teaches at Starr King School for Ministry, Graduate Theological Union, in Berkeley. Her books include Qur’an and Woman: Rereading the Sacred Text from a Woman’s Perspective, and Inside the Gender Jihad: Women’s Reform in Islam.

• Lecture and Q&A; reception and book signing to follow lecture.

SOULS AFIRE

The selection of the 2011-2012 “Souls Afire” Honors is underway.  We ask for your thoughtful consideration of undergraduate and graduate students of any classification (eg, first-year, sophomore, junior, senior, graduate student) who have made significant contributions to community service on our campus, in our city, in our state, and in our region. The purpose of the “Souls Afire” Honors is to recognize qualities of integrity, dedication to others, honesty, fortitude of character, courage, and obligation which are essential to effective leadership in community service.  The criteria used in determining honors recipients are as follows:

• Consistent life history of displaying honesty, responsibility, compassion, and devotion to the welfare of a community
• Remarkable actions benefiting others
• Unusual commitment of time, energy, and effort in service to others
• Unselfish gifts of friendship and collaboration offered in the partnership of service, support, and synergy to the betterment of others or of communities
• Scholarship (or grade point cumulative) is not a focal emphasis of this accolade, though it can be considered.  Good academic standing at the College is the minimum requirement.
• The deadline for submitting a nomination(s) is Friday, March 2, by 4:30 p.m.  Nominations may be completed and submitted by any Millsaps College students or alumni.  The attached nomination form may be forwarded to others to encourage their nominations.  Other students should write the recommendation letters or written endorsement; we discourage all applicants or nominees from seeking faculty-staff-administrator letters of recommendation for this particular award.  Self-nominated student applications are welcome!
• All nominations or applications should be submitted to the Vice President for Student Life’s office, 3^rd floor of the Campbell College Center.  Thank you for understanding that we cannot accept late applications or nominations.
• Up to 4 recipients may be selected by a panel of faculty/staff/students/alumni that, like true servant-leaders, remain anonymous until the recipients are announced at the annual Student Life Awards Celebration in April 2012.  The“Souls Afire” Honors may only be won once during a student’s college career at Millsaps.

                                              

SBA SENATE ELECTIONS

The Millsaps Student Body Association has 6 available senate seats, and we are seeking energetic, engaged student leaders to fill each of them! If you or someone you know is interested in running for SBA, then please consider applying to represent one of the following: Campus Wide, Sanderson, New Buildings, and New South. CHI OMEGA'S WALK-FOR-A-WISH

The Chi Delta Chapter of Chi Omega will be hosting their annual 5K Walk-for-a-Wish on Saturday, February 25th. Those participating can choose between a 1-mile “fun run” or the full 5K. All proceeds from the Walk will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, helping to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. The run begins at 8 AM and is $15 prior to the event and $20 the day of. It will start on Riverside Drive, adjacent to Millsaps College. Donations are accepted. ROBINSON INTERNATIONAL FELLOWS PROGRAM
2nd Announcement – deadline: February 1, 2012
The Office of International Education (OIE) is now accepting applications for the 2nd round of the Judy and E.B. Robinson, Jr., International Fellows Program for the 2011-12 academic year. The Program is designed to provide grants for financially needy students participating in study abroad programs offered by Millsaps College faculty. We hope that, if eligible, you will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to help you study abroad! Studying abroad is one of the most important aspects of a complete college education, and participating in a program with a Millsaps professor makes it that much more rewarding. This round of applications is for students applying to do Summer 2012 Millsaps programs (all programs EXCEPT Galapagos). The attached application form has 3 parts, including a short essay and a recommendation letter. NOTE: Be sure to complete the “Student Information” section on the Faculty Recommendation Form (Part III of the application).
The criteria for awarding a Fellowship include:

• Current Millsaps undergraduate student
• Have attended Millsaps for 1 full semester before applying
• Minimum GPA of 3.0
• Any class year EXCEPT seniors graduating in May 2012
• Strong evidence of financial need (as documented by the Office of Financial Aid, using the student’s FAFSA)*
• No prior Robinson support

*The Robinson Fellows Program is designed to give Millsaps students who otherwise would not be able to participate in a study abroad program that opportunity. Evidence of financial need is determined by the Office of Financial Aid, based on data from the applicant’s FAFSA, as submitted to the College for this academic year. Students must have a FAFSA on file at the time of application in order to be considered for the Robinson. Because the size of grants varies according to specific program fees, the exact program/class name must be indicated in Part I under “Applicant Information.” The deadline for submitting a Robinson application for Summer 2012 programs is February 1, 2012. Complete the attached application form (including student essay and faculty recommendation form plus letter) and return it in hard copy form** to: Ms. Tanya Newkirk, Associate Director of International Education, Box #150645 (or drop it by the Office of International Education, Sullivan-Harrell 248).**Applications submitted via email or fax will not be accepted. IMPORTANT: Do not wait until you hear about the Robinson to sign up for the program of your choice. The Robinson International Fellows Program cannot guarantee you a space in any program. Therefore, you are encouraged to sign up for the program of your choice now to insure your space. While only a deposit can ultimately guarantee your space on a study abroad program, contacting the professor and placing your signature on their sign-up sheet will indicate a desire to participate in the program. We in the OIE are confident that the professor will give you an opportunity to deposit before removing you from the sheet. Remember that Robinson Fellowships can only be used for study abroad courses/programs offered by Millsaps College faculty (i.e you may not use a Robinson for a 3rd-party provider program, or any other non-Millsaps program).

STUDENT ACTIVITIES...


ULTIMATE FRISBEE CLUB
The Millsaps College Ultimate Frisbee Club hosts pickup games every Friday at 3:00pm on the lower practice fields (close to the Woodrow Wilson fence). Players of ALL levels are welcome to play. It’s a very relaxed game and always a lot of fun. And if one of your new year’s resolutions was to exercise a little more, then Ultimate is the easiest and most fun way to do it.
We will also be working on fielding a team to travel to one or two tournaments this semester.
